Scalp Exfoliation - The Life Changing Hair Hack You Need to know

scalp-exfoliation

Want shinier, longer and healthier hair? Then you need to get your scalp exfoliation on because this little trick is an absolute game changer. Just like your face and body, a good scrub can do wonders for your lacklustre tresses and get your follicles back on track. Getting the hang of this will make a big difference to your hair health while taking very little time and effort in return. Today we’ve put together everything you need to know so that you can start scalp exfoliating like the best of them.

What is a scalp exfoliator? : A scalp exfoliator works just like your other scrubs to remove dead skin and product build up from your roots. It’s great if you have a flaky or dry scalp or even if you’re just a bit too heavy handed with the dry shampoo. The results are similar to that super swishy feeling you get after leaving the hairdresser’s. This is because that massage they give you when washing your hair is a great scalp cleanse too. Clogged follicles can eventually lead to hair loss, so this is definitely something to take seriously and work into your routine now.

How does it work? : The main reason this works is due to the fact that your scalp has more hair follicles and grease glands in comparison to other parts of your body. This encourages dead skin, sebum and excess product to build up more quickly making your hair greasy and your head itchy. Lovely stuff... Exfoliating clears this build up and allows the follicle to produce new, healthy hair without being restricted. This is great if you’re looking to boost growth as the process increases blood flow to your scalp. This means your follicles can receive more of the oxygen, nutrients and minerals they need to grow some seriously mermaid worthy hair. It’s also good to mention that if you have any damage from heat styling or bleaching exfoliating will remove this from the follicle too, giving you the best start for new hair growth.

How do I exfoliate my scalp? : You want to start with wet hair and work in sections. This will make it easier to get the product on the scalp evenly and will be more effective at removing dead skin and product buildup. Start by covering your scalp with product first and then start gently working it in for up to 10 minutes depending on how thick your hair is. Make sure you thoroughly rinse afterwards and then finish with your normal shampoo and conditioner routine. Super easy right? We’d also say it’s good to exfoliate once a week unless you have particularly sensitive skin, in which case you’ll need to figure out what works best for you. For anyone who uses a lot of wax or silicone based products you may want to up this to two but it’s totally up to you and will depend on your hair type.

What products do I use? : There are lots of great scalp exfoliators out there for every budget and hair type, so you won’t be stuck for choice. A good one to consider is the Lee Stafford Hair Growth Scalp Scrub, which includes his PRO GROWTH™ complex. It has lots of tiny beads that are great at stimulating and cleansing the scalp. We also like the Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt which is great for soothing a sensitive scalp as well as cleansing the follicles. Lastly and one that gets great reviews is the Grow Gorgeous Scalp Detox, it’s more pricey than the others but smells amazing and is really gentle. This is great if your scalp needs some extra care or is particularly itchy or problematic. Alternatively we’ve done some research and found a few home recipes that work wonders too because who doesn’t love a DIY hair hack, right?
