How To Avoid Frizzy Hair This Winter

how-to-avoid-frizzy-hairWalking your freshly straightened hair out the door and watching it change back into the frizzy, unkempt locks you woke up with can be super annoying. Frizz happens when your hair is dry and the cuticle is lifted allowing your strands to suck in the moisture they need and swell. You might think heat styling and using hairspray is enough to hold it back but there’s a lot more to it than that. To help you out we’ve put together our 7 most foolproof ways to avoid frizz this winter and keep your hair game strong.

1. Use The Right Products

Your hair gets frizzy when it’s dry so keeping your locks hydrated is pretty key in the fight against frizz. Start by making sure that you’ve got a shampoo, conditioner and some styling products that are hydrating and that work with your hair type. It’s good to keep an eye out for ingredients like Coconut oil, Argan oil, Avocado, Shea butter and Jojoba oil which are super conditioning.

2. Keep Heat Styling To A Minimum

Straightening, blowdrying and curling will all work to suck the moisture out of your hair and leave it more prone to frizz. Heat damaged hair is especially dry so it’s important to always use a protectant when styling and a temperature lower than 200° to keep your locks as healthy as possible.

3. Scrub Less

Washing your hair less will help your natural oils penetrate the hair and keep it hydrated. These oils will condition better than anything you could buy in a shop and will help tackle frizz too. Washing your hair less will also mean you don’t have to blow dry or style as often so you’ll be preventing heat damage at the same time.

4. Say No To Alcohol And Sulfates

Products that contain alcohol or sulfates dry out your hair making it more prone to frizz. Sulfates wash away natural oils and lift the cuticle making your hair totally ready to frizz out and alcohol will work to make it even drier. Try and switch to glycerin or silicone based products instead that will return moisture to your hair and keep it smoother for longer.

5. Take A Cold Shower

This step has other benefits including improved circulation and a boost to your immune system but it’s great for your hair too. Having a blast of cold water, even at the end of your shower, will seal the cuticle and keep your hair looking shiny and frizz-free for longer.

6. Ditch The Towel

When drying your hair it’s important not to rub it with a rough towel as this will definitely lift the cuticle and give you instant frizz. Instead squeeze your hair dry and opt for an old cotton t-shirt instead as this will be way less damaging. Smoothing some oil through the lengths and leaving it to dry naturally will be the best option though and most effective at preventing dryness and frizz.

7. Use A Leave-In Conditioner

Adding a leave-in conditioner to your daily routine will really help to keep your hair moisturised and prevent it from going dry and frizzy. Apply it to your wet hair after shampooing and conditioning to lock in the moisture before you start styling.  Make sure you choose one that works for your hair type though as you don’t want to weigh it down or make it look greasy.
